springy first friday

finally.
the warm winds of spring
have arrived!

greatly enjoyed a quick stroll downtown
with my sweetie
for april's first friday ~
1st stop: Scuppernong's
(seriously dislike the grape; seriously like the place)
a mild crush to hear the first reading
for wordsomnia ~
 (overheard someone on the street
pronouncing it 'wordsomania,'
which is not a bad interpretation.)
look up!  first time i did ~ so surprised to see an old skylight rather than the underbelly of a 2nd floor.
i feel entitled to membership in the 'remember when' society ~
before Triad Stage; before Natty Greene's; before it all.
when we only went downtown for the occasional foray
into the antique mall on the lower level of the old
Thalhimer's department store or
the annual children's Christmas movie & bike give-away
at the Carolina Theatre.
this was the start of a great thing.
2nd stop:  where else but Elsewhere?
after he followed us for a while,
swimming a blue whale toy alongside
as we made our distracted way from the front door,
we chatted with George Scheer,
he of the children's building block necklace,
boundless enthusiasm for the place he has built,
& grandson of the woman who collected all.these.things.
the kitchen table.
George tells us that, this year at Elsewhere,
everything is in its place.
glad to see my favorite window is, too.
button packages.
view from aloft.
video from aloft

book rethinking station
canned whispers at the elsewhere library
no sex or lies.  just videotape.
looseleaf.
can i come through here?
i wonder why i love elsewhere so much.
because, without fail,
i can suspend all else when i cross under
the lintel at the front door.
for me, it is as if stepping through a portal
to a mutual imagination place.
it is a human-magic narnia.
someone lost their UP balloons - oh, no!

will you have a swing with me?
