fun and games

decided to make a quick trip to Raleigh to coincide with Samuel running a cross-country race in Cary...
there's ALWAYS something going on in the capital city,
and this weekend was no different:
as a lover of shoes, especially comfortable shoes, this excites me!

oooooh, sparkles!
 with two sleepy teenagers
(one had been up since 5am due to an early XC race),
our pace was slow & a little less animated than is typical.

checking out the chalk murals with a little aerial fun in the background
the eye of the crow is magnificent!

a downtown software business called Red Hat
hosted a little hotbed of tech stuff,
which (in turn) was hosted by
a group called The Forge.
Nana and Joseph check out some circuitry
Joseph, Grandpa, & Samuel check out a 3D printer
one of the 3D printers at work
very.very.very
slowly
 soooooo....
i really have no idea
what this is, exactly.
it looked like a code of some sort?
they made a reference to something called
if that helps any of you.
didn't help me!

 this one used two Kinects
to translate movement into, um, well....
whatchamacallits.
and, then, there was this one.
where you chased a green square
around a screen
trying to capture it
with your ever-growing
rainbow snake.
 possibly the best toy, however,
were the Fiat beachballs
the boys got when i provided
valuable demographic information
that might (just might, they say!)
win me a new car.
 and the best game
was this one of Trivial Pursuit
played with their grandparents
& made incredibly challenging
due to the fact that it was purchased in 1987,
rendering all categories
as Ancient History.

not shying away from squeezing in
just one more
Big City oooh-la-la,
we walked down the street
to see some aerial dancers on the side of a building!
Bandaloop
kinda have to take a video
when people are dancing
on the side of a building.

that's all, folks

mainly for the grandparents

two trumpets
in the marching band.
two pairs of white shorts;
two pairs of white shoes.
double of everything
for just one year!
Joseph up top; Samuel in middle.
trumpets GO!
playing as the football team & cheerleaders enter the field

up into the stands (Samuel is just behind Joseph)
Samuel is to far left of drum major; Joseph is near her
 here, there, everywhere

Samuel, senior calm amidst the storm
'tis the season!

famous people in my town

Greensboro has the amazing opportunity to be the host city for the National Folk Festival this year - and for the next two years...phenomenal!  We took full-advantage of all three days & enjoyed some great music and fun performances.  Among them....
Rhiannon Giddens (formerly of the Carolina Chocolate Drops)
she has been on the cover of a few publications recently,
as she's just come out with a solo album.
we always enjoy seeing local talent make it big!
RG & co hanging out with fans after a set
there were so many volunteers & tech support ~
plus this banana
my parents came over for the afternoon
& vow to do the entire festival
next year!
Joseph & Grandpa
we all enjoyed hearing
this Iraqi duo
beautiful drum
 Rahim AlHaj playing the oud
we got up close & personal during his set
as it POURED rain & the only cover
was over the stage!
one of our local public art groups
facilitated a temporary sculpture project
called Rise Together
while this looks like just a pile of discarded ladders...it was a carefully-constructed sculpture you could walk under (if you dared).
 the Headliner:  Mavis Staples!
she is 76 & amazing!
i thoroughly enjoyed the sign language interpretation
of Mavis Staples' music
(from a purely aesthetic point-of-view)

& her fabulous band doing a percussion jam

a classic even i know....i'll take you there

can't be a North Carolina festival
without some stunning NC pottery
Ben Owen's tent
someone who may or may not be him
at the pottery wheel

& it, also, wouldn't be a NC festival
without Carolina blue skies
we checked out a LOT of performers,
like this Taiko group from
San Francisco
it was ALL 20-somethings except this one man who was typically on the back row - until this!
and, of course, there was Southern Gospel rockin' it
The Ingramettes (their mother, Maggie Ingram, passed away recently)
 until next year, Folk Festival!
love, Greensboro

the same weekend,
BERNIE SANDERS
came to town
&
we were there!
the podium pre-Bernie
 the CROWD pre-Bernie
more than 9,000 strong
 his campaign manager
announcing the Bern!

"The government belongs to all of us,
not just a handful of very wealthy people."

 looking at everyone's shoes
(trying to rest my old back,
which had already done 3 days
of the folk festival)
while Bernie talks about income inequality

Bernie!  (Samuel's in the teal shirt on the right - & Joseph is in the white shirt kind of in front of him)
BERNIE!
two out of three of us will be voting in this election (as will all of these voters surrounding us, we hope)
