famous people in my town

Greensboro has the amazing opportunity to be the host city for the National Folk Festival this year - and for the next two years...phenomenal!  We took full-advantage of all three days & enjoyed some great music and fun performances.  Among them....
Rhiannon Giddens (formerly of the Carolina Chocolate Drops)
she has been on the cover of a few publications recently,
as she's just come out with a solo album.
we always enjoy seeing local talent make it big!
RG & co hanging out with fans after a set
there were so many volunteers & tech support ~
plus this banana
my parents came over for the afternoon
& vow to do the entire festival
next year!
Joseph & Grandpa
we all enjoyed hearing
this Iraqi duo
beautiful drum
 Rahim AlHaj playing the oud
we got up close & personal during his set
as it POURED rain & the only cover
was over the stage!
one of our local public art groups
facilitated a temporary sculpture project
called Rise Together
while this looks like just a pile of discarded ladders...it was a carefully-constructed sculpture you could walk under (if you dared).
 the Headliner:  Mavis Staples!
she is 76 & amazing!
i thoroughly enjoyed the sign language interpretation
of Mavis Staples' music
(from a purely aesthetic point-of-view)

& her fabulous band doing a percussion jam

a classic even i know....i'll take you there

can't be a North Carolina festival
without some stunning NC pottery
Ben Owen's tent
someone who may or may not be him
at the pottery wheel

& it, also, wouldn't be a NC festival
without Carolina blue skies
we checked out a LOT of performers,
like this Taiko group from
San Francisco
it was ALL 20-somethings except this one man who was typically on the back row - until this!
and, of course, there was Southern Gospel rockin' it
The Ingramettes (their mother, Maggie Ingram, passed away recently)
 until next year, Folk Festival!
love, Greensboro

the same weekend,
BERNIE SANDERS
came to town
&
we were there!
the podium pre-Bernie
 the CROWD pre-Bernie
more than 9,000 strong
 his campaign manager
announcing the Bern!

"The government belongs to all of us,
not just a handful of very wealthy people."

 looking at everyone's shoes
(trying to rest my old back,
which had already done 3 days
of the folk festival)
while Bernie talks about income inequality

Bernie!  (Samuel's in the teal shirt on the right - & Joseph is in the white shirt kind of in front of him)
BERNIE!
two out of three of us will be voting in this election (as will all of these voters surrounding us, we hope)
