the Gregg

an afternoon visit to Raleigh
for eldest to play at the State basketball game,
so some time for the younger and me
to stroll down the street.
to the former Chancellor's residence,
now art/design museum.

my favorites,
in the order by which
they were encountered.

glowing paintings

the former were all housed
in the new & modern building;
the house portion held
many items, with my attention
captivated by the newel post's decoration.

cinematheque lumiere durham

full credit for this fascinating excursion
goes to my intrepid spouse,
watcher of silent films &
ephemera enthusiast.
like a speakeasy ~
in through the back door,
up the fishy(smelling) stairs,
knock & you enter
there.
no less
what, you might ask...
in celebration of the Lumiere brothers,
Louis and Auguste of Lyon, France ~
inventors of the Lumiere Cinematographe!

the first moving picture show:
December 28, 1895
first, however, came the Magic Lantern
(and i hear that NCSSM has an impressive collection
of this device and its slides, although
not generally open for the public to view....)

the fellow who has amassed this particular collection
and named it Durham Cinematheque
is a filmmaker, himself...of the art house variety.

Beta vs VHS
the debate wages on

i was particularly taken with this little film
by Segundo de Chamon,
The Red Spectre.

those of an age can already hear
the distinctive sound of a slide carousel turning
and the slides being moved into place.

gesundheit

personally, i didn't see any

my view between films

you can watch three of the Lumiere brothers' first films HERE.

we watched several at the Durham Cinematheque,
including films like THIS.

of course, soon followed other filmakers, like Melies,
with this amazing one
& many more!

illuminating!
