in the pines

perhaps our travel theme
should be
twenty-four hours in....

[such as]
 scenes from the crossroads
West End, NC

but the destination
was Southern Pines,
amid the sand hills of our state

in time to choose
between
breakfast or lunch
western spice

parisian flair
we were in the land
of the longleaf pine,
spiky starbursts
in the sky

after a wee rest on an unfamiliar bed,
we returned to downtown
where an active train line
causes Broad Street
to split itself,
one half on either side

born of necessity,
evidence of
a man good at persuasion

finding other possibilities
turning their signs
to 'closed,'
we high-tailed it out to
Weymouth Woods
our best wildlife sighting - a pileated woodpecker!

it was bug-hunting!

baby longleaf

southern lady hiking

prehistoric
(except for the bridge, of course)

fern for miles, it seemed

Piney Mama

yellow wild indigo or baptisia sphaerocarpa

racing the rain

ferns forever

the woods were full of indigo plants (indigofera tinctora)

wood anemone, or anemone quinquefolia
the thunder & drizzle
meant ours was the last car
left in the parking lot

though we had some trouble with the Gum Swamp trail
(the sun had turned the trail markers a reddish orange),
we eventually found a key intersection
& turned ourselves back around

ice-cream for dinner
sounded just right.
mine was two scoops: homemade peach & homemade strawberry
with chocolate sprinkles on top!
(hubby got a vanilla milkshake)

ice-cream parlor din (ner)

a lovely day in Southern Pines!
