along came a spider

a beautiful late summer day
in the garden;
the spider & i
with opposing purposes

she, with plans to entice;
i, with clear intent to avoid.

a flower crab spider (Misumena vatia),
her beach-like appendages
hinged and waiting.

amber-colored ants,
like attentive servants,
move in the spider's orbit
as she releases silk
from her spinneret

the silk strands
criss-cross,
hitching on points and edges
of a hibiscus
(rose of sharon)
like tripwires

she's waiting for dinner
