we had a lovely weekend
~ earlier this month ~
visiting Samuel at his
Americorps position at
Fairy Stone State Park
near Bassett, Virginia
we followed him
into the woods
at a much more leisurely pace
than he's used to!
the wildflowers were just starting to bloom
Quaker Ladies, in the spring wind
Woolly Groundsel
Star Chickweed
and the redbud trees were out,
ahead of all the green that summer will bring
the park was pretty quiet,
and some of the facilities haven't been used in over a year
Samuel is housed in his own cabin,
and this is the view from his kitchen door
hearts & ooooohs
love me some fungi
^^^the view, from both directions...
we look forward to coming back later in the summer
& enjoying the beachy lake!
a number of the cabins, which you can rent,
were built by the depression-era Civilian Conservation Corp
also, there's a town under that lake -
remnants of a very brief iron ore boom
that quickly fizzled
on several of the trails, you can see
the well-protected mine entrances
....eeek...
love him so much!
