mostly Sindy with a slight chance of Leia

going a little further down the crazy road, i have been sorting through some more dolls.  i was going to post this photo a week ago (may the fourth be with you), but i couldn't get her hair right.  (perhaps i should have referenced this site.)  i am as impatient a hairstylist as i am farmer, it seems.  as you can see, i finally (or, actually, more accurately - quickly) gave up.  much as i do for my own toilette.  if i had a daughter; her hairstyle might look something like this:

my 1978 Princess Leia doll
purchased once we returned to the USA
i recall waiting in line for the movie more than i remember actually watching it.  we lived in Scotland at the time, in a town that did not have a movie theater.  but we journeyed to a nearby town that did, waiting on the sidewalk with everyone else for the doors to open.  my recollection is that it was dark and there was a misting rain, but that could just be a generalization of our years in Scotland.  the movie came out in the summer, so it actually (that far north) should've been daylight for hours & hours.  it is highly likely that it was raining.

but, mainly, this post is about my Sindy doll.
(this was, also, during the three years we lived in Scotland.)  i, frequently, stood at the windows of the toy store and gazed at her, wishing i could own her.  she was exquisite.  it was a small store, with displays in the windows and a recessed door, so the toys could surround you before you even entered.  but we had no extra money.  none.zippo.zilch.  & certainly no money for such a luxury item.  then, my grandmother came for a visit.  my dad's mom.  from the united states, the land of wealth and opportunity.  and she bought me the Sindy doll.  and (gasp!)...outfits.

looking at some websites, it seems i have
wedding dress made by my Aunt Lucinda from an old slip
i was about seven when i got her, and i loved my Sindy doll for a long time.  she was always my favorite (although there's a special place in my memories for The Sunshine Family, too - scroll down to #7 in link).  she never looked generic like my Barbie dolls, which are bruised and naked in a box somewhere in my parents' attic.

what flare!  what panache!  what individuality!
the Weekender (fueling my unrequited love for halter tops)
In The Swim (however, she is commando as i couldn't find the bathing suit)
the About Town coat, one of my favorites!
this one's called Quick Change.  who knows why.
Disco Date (alligator used for effect only)

the outfit which, of course, initially captivated
my little seven-year old self,
was the Ballerina.
i can't find the ballet shoes or tights right now,
but i was in love with her purple tutu.
really, besides a ballgown, i'd like to go around
dressed like a ballerina.
with yellow satin toe shoes.
thank you very much.
