walk&roll

according to all sorts of publications, i have one of the best jobs in the world.  (okay, "in the world" might be a bit of a stretch, but....)  i love what i do, especially on days like today.  i really like many things about my work, but i loooooove adapting activities.  today, we had a walk/roll/run fundraiser followed by lunch and games.  in keeping with the theme, i got two pairs of used children's shoes (paying special attention to the tread designs, of course) and two wheeled vehicles (with similar inspection of tread potential).  i hot-glued rounded dowels in the heels of one pair of shoes & hot-glued foam tubing in the heels of the other pair.  perhaps unnecessarily (blame it on the hot-glue fumes), i also hot-glued the axle of the little yellow bulldozer so it would run in a straight line (i won't go down the rabbit's hole of my clinical reasoning on this one....but, suffice it to say, i had some).  i considered converting the chicken car into a gator car (our school mascot is an alligator), but that proved entirely too complicated (and slippery).

everything just so
it occurs to me that, maybe, i should tell you that many of the children i work with at this particular school use a wheelchair to get from one place to another.
&, for most of these children, someone else does the pushing.

so i wanted to make sure to represent the way they travel, which is on wheels.
(although not in bulldozers or chicken cars.)
some of these children also have a difficult time holding things.
 didn't they make some fantastic
walk&roll art?

my original activity idea was to make unpoppable bubbles, as advertised on t.v. (or, at least, pinterest).  no, that's a lie.  i don't do pinterest.  i saw it on facebook.  but why, on earth, is it a food recipe?  does the corn syrup qualify it?  sorry, back on topic.  well, it was going to rain, so suddenly our outdoor plans had to become indoor....and i scrapped the exuberant bubbles for sedate painting.  but, then, the morning dawned sunny - so i just did them both!  & neither was very sedate.  which was fine by me.  really, it's a surprise i didn't throw glitter everywhere, as that has become my trademark.  i will admit i considered it.
one of our creative speechies* made this sign for me.
 *speechie = speech/language pathologist

well, the bubbles were NOT unpoppable.
but they were sticky & sweet.
they were also green because i just happened to combine
blue and yellow dish detergent.
so, it was all-around awesomeness.

one of my speechie friends also painted an octopus on my face.
yes.  i have one of the best jobs
in the world.
