Many Glacier Hotel & environs

Many Glacier Hotel (photo by Mike)
so, in Glacier they have the Red Jammers.  you can take expensive tours through the park in them.  we wouldn't have considered it, anyway, and there was still a lot of snow in the park (the Going to the Sun road never did open up while we were there) so i'm not sure where they were going to take people....pretty, though.
you could get around on a horse, too.  we did consider that but never committed.  in general, we stuck to our feet.
this was a very pretty lodge (though my taste still runs more to the Old Faithful Inn's style; this one was just a little fussy) with a tremendous location.  you can see our windows just to the left of the lower roofline in the photo below.  no view (well, basically we looked into someone else's room), so we didn't stay in the room much at all.  there was no lack of vistas everywhere else!

the hotel had a really nice fireplace, with great seating.  the fire was maintained by the bellmen, who got to wear lederhosen (lucky guys!).
people come to this part of Glacier to hike.  the lobby was a busy place, with bright-eyed groups preparing to head out & others coming in wet, cold, and with (almost always) an exciting wildlife-encounter tale.
Fact of the Day (photo by Mike)
one of the evenings in the hotel, some of the park employees put on a modern version of the 'Hootenanny.'  it was in keeping with current youth culture in that the primary presentations were self-reflective, brooding songs rather than catchy sing-alongs.  certainly talented musicians - but not the lively, upbeat, and funny production we anticipated.

the lobby.....had wifi.  slow - but that still counts.
the sad truth (photo by Mike)

the area of the hotel i found the most aesthetically appealing (not, of course, counting the VIEW from the windows) was the restored dining room.  we ate a lunch here, which was a great opportunity to introduce the boys to fine dining etiquette while wearing jeans.

there was a Swiss theme going on in the hotel
(nurtured, of course, by the Alp-like setting).
it took me until the very last night to figure out that these square pillows were actually just rectangle pillows tightly packaged.  sigh.  it is not the most comfortable thing to sleep on a fat square pillow.
the shower was the most complicated contraption, but we did manage to stay clean while there.  &, it turned out, you only had to do ABCD not E!  or maybe it was ABCE and not D.  i just started pulling and pushing in different combinations until the water finally came out hot & from the right place.

always with the camera.

it was a lovely place to hang out & get off the pack&go trail for a little while.
