south carolina follies

summer adventures
took me and Joseph
south of the border
(carolina, that is)

to visit my brother
and his peachy-beachy family

where we ate peaches
and went to the beach
(among other things)

but, first things first....
Joseph & Alex get caught up on Civilizations
Samantha & Joseph navigate some Minecraft together
then we headed to Isle of Palms
for some waterside hanging-out
Sam and her dad (my brother, Jeff)
Morgan Creek Grill is a favorite watering hole
looking good sound-side
 later, we enjoyed
a dusky & windy walk
on the beach
me, Joseph, Samantha, and my sister-in-law Kelly
the next morning,
Jeff and i took their kayaks out for a paddle.
we launched from his backyard!
(by launch, i mean we pulled/pushed the kayaks
through the muck and reeds at the edge of his yard
to the thin channel of water
then used the reeds to tug the kayaks
- and ourselves - along
until the channel opened up
and we could paddle!)
it was a beautiful morning
saw lots of snowy egrets and other waterfowl
we decided to do the return dock at his neighbor's house

back at the house,
Joseph entertained periodically on the keyboard
(lucky us!)
Samantha watching carefully
Sam and her purple feather boa
we joined some of their friends
at Wild Dunes (on Isle of Palms)
for a beachy afternoon
(water like a bath & wind like an exfoliation)
then burgers and fireworks
to celebrate Independence Day

but, first things first....
Ian, Alex, and Joseph take the couch ... Samantha and Scarlett take the Wii
later, we hoofed it
to the Pavillion at Wild Dunes
to view the IOP Fireworks

surprise! fireworks are ALWAYS on sale
in South Carolina.
in any case,
we made a pilgrimage to Firecracker Bill's
on July 5th
perusing the stock
 & later....
Jeff and Joseph went on a JetSki excursion!
getting ready

gearing up
last-minute instructions
the licensed driver had to take the lead (for now)
they were the last to pull away

zooming to the inlet
Joseph, in light blue
 meanwhile...
i had a shrimp skewer with pineapple salsa on the top deck of Morgan Creek Grill (p.s. & i read a story or two from the fabulous collection written by a college friend...i highly recommend the book, The Other One)
i was able to spy them coming back
from my perch
...
guess who's driving now?

last ones out...means first ones back

they look rather happy, don't they?
who can resist the wake?

lining up to land
Joseph did a great job!

big smiles
bigger smile
two dudes with awesome hair
then, a quiet evening at the house
Samantha
 indigo night

made complete
with homegrown fireworks
~ ~ ~
here are the 'tanks' the kids had fun setting up
and setting off
(well, Jeff and Joseph did the honor of lighting the fuses)
here's the Fountain that Samantha wanted
& here are the sky-high ones

thanks, Jeff, Kelly, Alex, and Sam!

we had a blast :)
